8 New Year Resolutions for Yoga Lovers

It’s officially a new year. We’ve created this list of new year resolutions for yoga lovers so that you can start the new year off right. Last year was great and all but this year can be even better. It’s about taking your life to the next level. It’s about feeling more fulfilled, happy and healthy.

1.Practice Daily - They didn’t create the practice daily hashtag without good reason. Daily yoga practice is great for your health. Sure mastering your flexibility and improving your physical strength is amazing. However, the idea of focusing on your breath and being in the moment is so much more important. Let go of yesterday’s stresses and obstacles with one big exhale. Focus on the present moment. Today is the start of a new chapter. You can rewrite your story anyway you’d like. Starting the year with mindfulness will help you lower any anxiety.

2.Eat mindfully - The new year is a chance for a new beginning. Focus on consuming food that makes you a healthier and stronger person. Nourish your body with fruits, vegetables and lots of water. Say goodbye to carbonated drinks and junk food. It’s about fuelling your body for maximum performance. The holiday season consisted of potlucks, buffets and yummy desserts. It’s time for cleansing your body. Balance your diet with carbs, protein and healthy fats.

3.Challenge yourself - Start the new year with a challenge. What would you love to accomplish this year? Maybe you want to finally be able to do a complicated yoga pose. Maybe you want to cross things off your bucket list. Do something that you’ve been pushing off for months or even years and start working at it daily. Now’s the perfect time to be in the right mindset to make things happen. You can do anything you set your mind to. Take things to the next level. Accomplish the impossible.

4.Strengthen your muscles - As a woman, I love seeing strong women. I find it so inspiring to see women use their muscles to carry heavy weights or hold their body up. If your goal is to lose weight this year add some strength training to your cardio. It’s not just about being slender it’s also about being strong. As the saying goes, strong is the new sexy. Don’t be afraid of having a toned body it doesn’t make you masculine, it makes you a strong woman. Having inner and outer strength is admirable.

5.Love harder than ever before - Yoga is all about love. In Buddhism, we learn to respect animals. So that means don’t kill the spider or fly on the wall. It’s also about loving the people around you. Be more patient with people who may be experiencing adversity in their daily life. Spend time with your family and friends. Don’t postpone hangouts with people who are constantly asking to spend time with you. Don’t cancel last minute on friends who’ve been by your side this whole time. Enjoy being with the people you love. Appreciate every second you have with them.

6.Random acts of kindness - Going off the previous point, show kindness to strangers. You never know what another person is going through. Tip the person while getting your morning coffee. Mail a complete stranger a gift card. Buy flowers for someone at the hospital. Volunteer at your local charity. Run a 10k while raising money for a cause you’re passionate about. This year, focus on giving to the world. What are you great at? Share it with the world!

7.Put the environment first - If you love outdoor yoga, give back to mother nature. Maybe that means cleaning up litter at your local park. Maybe that means taking a day in the year to plant trees. Maybe that means speaking to your mayor and asking what you can do to help care for the environment. Maybe you’ll choose to spend less electricity and act like it’s Earth Day every day for a year. Use this year to spend more time outdoors. Appreciate everything in nature. Soak in the beauty of the trees, flowers, grass and animals.

8.Make new friends - Post on your social media asking if anyone wants to start coming to yoga class with you. Rekindle friendships with old friends and acquaintances. Maybe invite a classmate to hang out after class. Focus on building new relationships in the year. According to LiveScience, people who have strong friendships tend to live longer. It’s never too late to make a new best friend.
